Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

I live in Illinois, I am in the middle of a divorce and have some questions that I don't think my lawyer is answering correctly according to what I have read and need a second opinion. What determines the length of a marriage? marriage day to time of filing for divorce or the date of judgement?

Th court has the discretion to pick a different date, including the date of separation. But today it is effectively the date of the judgment.
