Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois
being sued by exhusbands jealous girlfriend, not guilty, need help
My ex-husband's girfriend is sueing me for stealing 1,000.00 in change from a jar . There was an incident involving my taking my two daughters to get things that their father refused to allow them to take home after a visit. They had a key to the home. I did not leave the vehicle. They did take their stuff but not money. Upon returning home police were invited to search what was the kids took as the girlfriend had already filed a report seeing that the kids things were gone from her home. Ex is not sueing. I offered to be finger printed and to take a lie detector test, but this never transpired. This was three years ago this July. There is no evidence at all. I have to drive 3 1/2 hours to Champaign from southern illinois and have little means to do so. I must borrow a vehicle and money. Can I counter sue for my missing work and the gas money? Can I ask for a dismissal at the first hearing? I can not afford an attorney and have n clue of the proceedings. I need advice.
Please help if you can.
Carla

Contact the Champaign County Bar Association or the University of Illinois law school for a referral to a pro bono (free) lawyer in that community. Based on your income, you may qualify. You can also ask the judge at the first hearing if you may qualify for free legal assistance. If you are unable to obtain legal assistance, go to every court appearance and tell the judge your side of the story.
