Normally the person will serve jail time for criminal conviction and be sent to immigration court for deportation process.

We suggest you to consult with an immigration attorney.

He will be dealt with in criminal court first, and will serve his sentence. After that, he will not be released, but will be transferred to ICE (immigration) custody and referred to Immigration Court for removal (deportation).

With a felony conviction, it's hard to say what his chances of staying in USA would be. It depends on a crime and conviction. As an aggravated felon, he may be permanently banned. He shall definitely consult a good immigration attorney for advice.
