can en employer force payback of commissions he paid you if there was no signed agreement, only verbal, and details of that verbal were not outlined until AFTER a large sale was brought in by the salesperson?

I'm not sure I undersatnd your question. Did the employer change the terms of its commission policy AFTER it paid you the commission and now wants to recoup some of the commission? Commission are considered wages in Illinois and unless the recoupment is due to a mistake not a policy change, your employer cannot do what you decsribe.
