Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
I was fired from work today. I have been disciplined for being tardy to work, when several other employees including the store manager have been late several times and no action has been taken on anyone else but myself. Can they do this? Do I have a lawsuit?

In Illinois, your employer can fire you for any reason without incurring liability for wrongful termination unless the firing violates an agreement or violates a specific law. In order to determine if you have a cause of action, further facts are needed. In order to prevent you from obtaining unemployment benefits, your employer must, however, articulate a reason recognized by the unemployment insurance act. Many employers cannot meet this standard so you should pursue unemployment benefits.
