Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I am with my government job for 11 years. Our entire department was transfered under new managment, All have the same jobs as before. New managment has requested that we attend Outreaches at various sites throughout the City. This has never been asked of me before. However, they have asked me to go to a neighborhood which is known for high crime. I am somewhat older and would have to take public transporation to the Outreach. I may be able to take a cab there but I can tell you there would be no cabs in that neighborhood when I came out. And, I do not know if the facility itself is safe. Can I be fired for refusing to attend under these circumstances? I am concerned for my safety. I would be the only person attending this Outreach.This type of work is part of my job description.

It sounds like you can be fired but you will be entitled to unemployment due to the substantial change in your working environment.
