Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

Is it illegal for an outside person, to tell an employer NOT to hire an individual? Similar to blacklisting? In Illinois?

Was the "outsider" a personal reference of yours? Or did the person's name either come up in your interview with the employer like your prior employer? Some people like previous employers do have a right to give an opinion about your work quality and ethics and the old rule is that if you have nothing good to say you say nothing.... But if there is a legal reason you can't be hired, and that person is asked....so it really depends on what the question was, or the answer was. But if the "outsider" lied, or gave information that was otherwise false about you or commented on something that was illegal (racial issues....) then you may have some legal rights. Unfortunately most of these kinds of things are word of mouth only and the likelihood of proving wrongful comment against you could be difficult if not impossible.
