Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I am a part-time employee at a 24/7 emergency animal hospital. I started off as full-time but my hours have slowly gotten cut over the past year. I was cut from one of my shifts since I was the "low man on the totem pole" only to be replaced with someone who started a year after me. The shift they currently have me working is 5 p.m.-12 a.m. on Sat night and then I start again Sunday morning at 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. This was supposed to be "temporary" but I have been doing it for 9 months. I am tired and fed up and would like to quit, but someone brought up that I could possibly get unemployment because of the shifts that I've been giving being illegal and unfair? I'm not sure if this is true, but if it is I would like to know if I am better off giving my 2 week notice and quitting, or just writing a letter and quitting today. I would like to get unemployment if possible since I am a single mother with 2 small children, but if it isn't going to happen that's fine, too.

It's a gamble as to whether or not you will be awarded unemployment. Does your schedule interfere with parenting, school, etc? If so, you will have a stronger basis for unemployment. Also, be aware that unemployment benefits represent only a percentage of your earnings. It is not a dollar for dollar payment.
