Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
retaliation at work by neighbor
Had a property line dispute with neighbor. Property was surveyed, but neighbor continued mowing on my side. He threatened to assault me in my yard, turned off mower and drew fist. Police were called. He made threats related to my kids. His wife works at my office. I had given her a letter at work to deliver to him requesting to stop tresspassing. A week later, when the fence builders come out and likely after a notice of his arraignment was received she went crying to administration claiming to be upset because I gave her the letter in the office. This woman has freely talked about her husband making assault threats to the other neighbor. I have discussed the events leading to decision to build a fence with other coworkers, but never directly with her. I was called to office, because she went crying to administration, and received a reprimand saying I can't talk with her. She had passed the letter I wrote to her husband to others in the office despite claiming to be upset about this being in the office. I think that this is an attempt to retaliate for my pressing charges and for building a fence. Any advice on what to do? Thanks.

Re: retaliation at work by neighbor
I would say you got yourself into this mess - it was inappropriate for you to communicate with her at your job. She can play the game all she wants - you can only try to convince your bosses that you did not mean harm and thought she was OK with it. Unless she is spreading lies about you, there really is no law against work gossip. As for the underlying dispute, sounds like the fence mended that issue.
