Possible Violation of Employment Contract

I was under a temporary employment contract which specifically stated that I was to return all company documents immediately and without being asked, to the company. I kept approximately 2 legal boxes worth of copies of original company documents, along with numerous downloaded copies of company documents that I kept on a flash drive. I never destroyed or returned them as requested, but rather, kept them for a pending lawsuit in which I am the plaintiff. The company is not the defandant, but is indirectly related to my lawsuit. I was asked to produce all of these documents in my possession by the defandants atty and have done so. The company has now been made aware that I retained their documents and has requested copies from the defendants atty. Can my ex- company pursue legal or criminal action against me for retaining these documents?

Hello. You probably should have given the defendant copies of the documents, rather than turn over the originals. Be prepared to ask the defendant's attorney to make copies of what you gave them and give you back the originals. This is my suggestion.
