Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I work in a Dental Office and last Wednesday one of the Doctor's Wife told me that the Dr. was coming back into work that evening to retire an employee. That evening I told this to some of my co-workers. I told them that Jolie who is the Wife had told me that "The Doctors are retiring Faith." Today when I arrived at work, I was fired. I was told it was because I said, " that they were firing her." I did not say that they were firing her. I told the Dr this when he questioned me and again, "I told him no I said retiring." He said well that is the same thing. Why is it fair, that I am fired and his Wife whom also works there is not?

I had never heard of "retiring" someone else, always thought that was something only the individual could do, as in, "I am retiring," and not "I was retired." In any event, it sounds like a euphemism for firing to me.

It probably is not fair that you were fired, or retired, or terminated, or sacked, and Jolie was not, but unless you have an employment contract or collective bargaining agreement, there is not much you can do about it. You may be eligible for unemployment, provided there is not a written company policy which you violated.
