Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
I work at a small insurance company in Illinois. We have about 60-70 employees. Our normal business hours are 7:30-4:30, Monday through Thursday, and from 7:30-12:00 on Fridays. A skeleton crew of non-exempt employees works Friday afternoons to answer telephones. These employees had been compensated for working Friday afternoons by getting an afternoon off of their choice. However, we are now being told this practice will no longer be done because the company is vioolating the law by doing so. Employees who work Friday afternoons will no longer be compensated with an afternoon off.
Is this correct? Did that practice violate the law?

The law requires an employee to be paid for all hours the employee has worked. Private sector employers are not allowed to substitute monetary compensation with comp time.
