Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
I work at a tanning salon and have worked here for four years. I work behind the counter assisting customers as well as do airbrush tanning for women. When I learned how to spray tan I was told I would never have to spray tan men. Now years later my bosses are trying to force me to spray tan men even though I have told them that I am uncomfortable doing that and that I won't do it. Even though I have told them this makes me uncomfortable and that I don't want to do it they continue to schedule spray tans while I am working, so I am forced to call the clients and cancel the appointments as well as deal with my boss afterward. This has a major interference with my job because it creates a hostile environment. I have even been told I will be fired if I do not start spray tanning men. Keep in mind I am a young attractive woman, who mostly works alone and night shifts. I feel this is an innappropriate request for me to go into a room with a strange man and have him get half naked. Do I have a right to deny this? Can I get fired for not complying or is this considered sexual harrasment?

In Illinois, you can be fired for any reason, no reason, or even a made up reason unless terminating you violates an employment contract or law. That said, what you have described above might be the beginning of a hostile work environment, but I would need more facts to help make the legal determination of hostile work environment. I would be happy to chat with you to discuss your specific situation.
