Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois
I have been working for a fire department for the last four years on a part-time basis, never had an issue with getting hours. I put in a schedule every month and typically get 4 or 5 days in that month. I also work full time so this is just my part time job. I don't necessarily get along with the Chief but I also don't have to deal with him often. I have never had any work related issue due to my performance and have a clean record there. I have even received positive letters from members of the community that I have helped. For the past two months I have been given 1 day of work. When I asked the shift supervisor why I didn't get more days, it was the cheif that responed and said that the schedule was done with his direction and that he is trying to change the culture and looking for individuals with certain characteristics and if I wanted to discuss further to talk with him. This seems like a personal attack but I'm not sure what my next step should be. None of the other members have received shortened hours, it is just me.

In general, in Illinois, your employer is permitted to,change your schedule with or without notice. However, your employer cannot change your schedule if your schedule change results in adverse action (fewer hours) because of your inclusion in a protected class (such as race, national origin, sexual orientation, military status, etc). Moreover, because you work for a public agency, specific rules apply to job changes, including schedule changes. A bit more information is required to give you better direction.
