Legal Question in Personal Injury in Illinois

My son, who is 13, shot a folded piece of paper with a rubberband on the school bus at his brother. It inadvertantly hit a girl as she turned around, in the eye. It caused damage to her cornea that has needed extensive medical care. We recently got a call from a lawyer from Chicago, we are close to Champaign, IL, telling me they need info on my homeowners insurance due to this girls medical insurance not covering all of her expenses. I am a single, unemployed, full time student and mother of four. I don't have homeowners insurance. Plus, I don't have any money or property to give. I'm lucky if I can pay my own bills, let alone help someone else with theirs after an accident. What could be my course of action?
