Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

My ex boyfriend currently has my dog, i am trying to get my dog back since he is mine, I had him before I ever met my ex. He claims to have text messages that I sent him stating he could keep the dog. I said I was undecided. He went to a lawyer and a police officer and they both say that the dog is his. I never signed any papers to give him ownership. He has threatened me that if I don't sign a bill of pay that I will never see my dog again. Can text messages really work if I said he could have the dog but with conditions, I have changed my mind. I really think that a text message isn't a legal document for ownership of a dog right?

Police officers do not decide such matters. Assuming he actually did talk to an attorney, the attorney only knows his side of the story, and it is only that attorney's opinion. Did he give you the attorney's name. It is amazing how few people who say they have "talked to an attorney" actually have done so. If you sign a bill of sale (I assume that is what you mean), the dog will definitely be his. Without knowing what you said in your text messages, I have no idea if those messages could be interepreted as some sort of agreement.
