Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

If i hold a key to my neighbors house, and they don't live their, would i be responsable for any damages that may or could occur?

Not likely, unless you did something that could be construed to be negligent.

What did you agree to do when you agreed to "hold the key"? Let meter readers in, check the mail and bring it in the house, let their dog out twice a day? As Mr. Dobra says, being negligent is what gets you in trouble, but you first have to ask yourself what it is you agreed to do, and then again what the neighbors think they asked you to do. Hopefully you will agree as to the scope of your obligations.
