Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois
Illinois township assessor on property unwelcome
I just had an Il township assessors' office send 2 people to my property without notice that they would come. They were unwelcome and I told them so. By asking if I could help, they said that they were from the assessor office and had come to measure a building. I told them that I understood that they were to do their thing from the road not my driveway. They proceeded to get out of yheir car and take measurements. Is this leagal?

Yes. Otherwise, no one would allow them access and the assessments would be inaccurate.
Re: Illinois township assessor on property unwelcome
I am in the exclusive practice of representing property owners and reviewing/contesting property tax assessments in Illinois. The Assessor's are held to a statutory duty to "uniformly" and fairly assess property at its Fair Market Value. In order to effectuate that type of committment, it is imperative that the Assessor be able to identify and characterize each piece of property within his/her jurisdiction. That being said, there is no reason why they shouldn't honor your wishes to make an appointment if you wanted to be around to review their measuring of the property and the improvements located on the property. I would say it is legal within the boundries of your comfort level to have some sort of assurances to confirm that these people were actually from the Assessor's Office and not merely casing your house for a future burglary.
