Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

I live on campus and slipped and fell on some steps they didn't bother to clean or salt, and my cell phone broke. I don't have the money to replace it and its my only means of keeping in touch with my mother. I talked to their facilities department and they said risk management told them it's not worth filing the claim because the steps dont have to be considered a walkway and hence, not negligence.

Contact a personal injury attorney in your area. I totally disagree with their answer. You deserve compensation.

I don't at all agree with their assessment. Stairs are absolutely a "walkway" and they know it. The practical problem that you have is that you did not relate that you suffered any physical injury, only property damages. Nevertheless, you might wish to think about filing a Small Claims action against the school. If the school has an affiliated law school, you should perhaps contact them to see if they have a clinic associated that could help you along. Good Luck!

"Worth it" for whom? NOTHING is worth it if the claim is being filed against me. The problem is that a PI attorney will charge 30% of the recovery value if they win. On a $200 cell phone, their pay would be $60.00 or so. Still, a few minutes time and a sheet of legal stationary might well do the trick.

Try to see if personal property is covered under your mother's homeowner's/renter's insurance policy. My wife and I added computers to our recently and it will cost us $30.00 per year. That might be locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen, but better late than never.
