Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

French succession law

My mother is French (lives in US now) and her father passed away in France in the 1980's. She received nothing. Her stepmother just passed away and has no children or living parents but she does have a niece whom she never talked to. I believe in France that children are entitled to 50% of assets.

Do you think my mom has a case even though her father passed away over 20 years ago? Should she hire a lawyer? Should that lawyer be French or American?

Thank you so much for your time,

V.K.

Re: French succession law

Your mother needs to have a lawyer who is familiar with French probate/property laws to review this matter. Try calling the Chicago Bar Association lawyer referral number for some potential leads to finding an attorney.

I had a similar case in the U.S. where a daughter was able to obtain funds from property owned by her father decades after his death.

Good luck to you.
