The law is complex. The granddaughter should consult a lawyer to explain the details and get appropriate advice and representation.

Technically, the family can't prosecute, they make a criminal complaint and the police and state's attorney determine if there is a potential criminal violation. Granddaughter definitely needs to find a lawyer in her area who is experienced in criminal law. Granddaughter needs to gather any evidence that tends to prove her version of what happened and safeguard it.
