If the deceased spouse had children, the wife, as a surviving spouse, is entitled to one-half the financial estate. What is in the decedent's financial estate depends on how his assets were configured. The surviving spouse is entitled to all if there are no children. The spouse may be liable for some of all of the debts of the deceased spouse.
