My mother in law passed away this morning. We cannot find a will. She had a home. What does my wife need to do?

It is difficult to give any clear guidance without a full consultation. I highly suggest meeting with an estate administration attorney. Without a will her estate may have to go through probate. Any experienced attorney will be able to guide you through the process.
The funeral, the disposition of the bodily remains and the grieving process will overshadow the technical issues in the immediate future. As to the technical issues, your wife will probably find talking to an attorney in your locale helpful. If your wife has siblings, they should be brought into the process, assuming everyone gets along. It's the time of year tax statements are being mailed. The decedent's mail should be safeguarded and reviewed for hints as to any financial assets, bills to pay and 2017 tax compliance issues. If your mother in law had pets, they should be taken care of. Let time show you what needs to be done and contact an attorney for specifics.
