Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

In order for an amendent to a will to be legal do you have to go to a lawyer or can you write one yourself and have it notarized?

It is not required that a lawyer or other person draft or execute a will or a codicil (amendment), but an amendment should be witnessed and notarized according to state law.

I would strongly recommend that you hire a lawyer. Although you might think that your changes are small, your attorney may disagree. Keep in mind, if you are leaving significant assets to people who COULD battle over them, in many circumstances -- they WILL. Your wishes will most likely be followed according to your desires if you let your attorney do the drafting and assist you at signing. Minimal fees to an estate planning attorney could avoid a legal nightmare for your loved ones.
