as a business, am i legally responsbile
to replace a stale check (over 1 year) of
a former independent contractor?
since he left, my compnay has had to
repair many of his mistakes and i do
not feel i should have to replace this
check

You need to post more information concerning your agreement wth the I.C.
Was there a provision for repairs? Was there a proivision for notice to the I.C. if repairs were neeeded so that the I.C. could take care of it?
If not, then sit down with the I.C. and show him why you do not feel you should have to replace that check. The worst that can happen if he and you can not agree and you dont replace it is that he sues you and you can explain your reasons to a judge.
