Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

Got summons how to answer complaint

I received a summons to collect a credit card debt. I am unemployed and have no money. I am living with my son and he supports me right now. The amount of the debt is $3253. Would like to know how to answer the complaint without a lawyer. Can you just write a letter to the court? And what is a ''claim for relief against the plaintiff''? Please help me.

Re: Got summons how to answer complaint

"Claim for Relief" sounds like the complaint in a small claims case. Your county clerk may have a small claims advisory service, to look into that. Go to the county courthouse and ask around. There may be specific instructions on what to do contained in the summons or other papers sent to you. Make sure you file an answer, a written statement showing why you don't owe the money, or that much money. Even if they get a judgment against you, your assets may be exempt. If you own a home, make sure you file a homestead on it. Go to the library and read as much as you can about debt collection law. Good luck.
