if a american citizen was dating an illegal immigrant from mexico in the united states and planned to get married in mexico, how would the illegal go about getting a green card and how long would it take?

It would really depend on this illegal immigrant's situation. For example, how long has she been living in USA; how and on what visa (or without visa) did she come to USA; etc etc.

One of the things to consider: If she leaves and goes abroad after staying illegally for over a year, she will trigger an inadmissibility bar 10 years.

It depends on how long the immigrant remained illegally inside the U.S. along with their general immigration history as well.
