My permanent residency expired in august 2009 and I currently do not have enough money to renew it. Can I file for an extension?

Was your green card valid for 10 years or was it a conditional green card valid for 2 years?

If it was a card for 2 years, then your situation is not that simple and you can be referred to Immigration Court for removal (deportation).

Otherwise, you can file the form I-90 to renew an exired card with a validity period of 10 years.
