accept certified letter or not?

My 85 year old mother moved to another state and left her apartment of 5 yrs for medical reasons. The landlord wanted her to pay for the 10 mos. remaining in her contract for 1 year. Without the money to do so and in poor health she left. He rented her place in 2 mos. She has received a certified letter from a lawyer and wonders what will happen if she just continues to refuse it?

Likely she will owe at least two months.
