Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa

Multiple problems with landlord

We had a verbal agreement with our landlord that we would catch up on rent when we were repayed 1500.00 owed to us by my dad for wedding payments. She agreed to this. Now she have served us with papers to evict us. It is a known fact that her daughter and soninlaw are being forclosed on thier house and have no where to go. We just resigned our lease Aoril 1. We received certified letters the day of our wedding. Can our verbal agreement hold up in court? There are alot of damages to the house that need to be fixed and she will not fix them. Her mail is still sent here, her son lived with us the first six months and we were still required to pay the bills that she has in her name, because she did not want them taken out of her name, and we have been told by numerous people that she isnt even supposed to be renting out this house. We have four children, one of which is four months old. It took us a week just to clean the place up to even live in. What should we do? There are somany other details as well that there is not enough room for. PLease helps me to understand what she can and can not do.

Re: Multiple problems with landlord

The judge probably can't make the landlord honor a verbal agreement if the lease says that only written agreements and only written changes to the agreement are valid.

Contact your local tenants rights organization or a local attorney.
