Your son can betion for you, provided that he is over 21 years of age. As to whether you can apply for a green card (permanent residency) without having to leave the country and go to your home country, will depend on your particular situation and circumstances.
There is no way to apply for residency simply because you've been living in USA for 20 years (since 1980s) -- someone has to petition for you, and you have to prove your eligibility.

Your son may petition for you to become a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. Both you and your son file a petition and applications for your green card and employment authorization. When you are interviewed, the USCIS officer will determine your suitability to become a lawful permanent resident. If you meet the criteria for residency, your will be granted status. If you both wish to go through this process, you can contact my website, www.seglegal.com, so you can find out what you need to do. We handle cases all over the United States, and would be happy to discuss your situation. Take care and good luck!
