Bear in mind that this is an oversimplification: Jurisdiction over a person means that the court in question has the authority to address legal issues regarding the person, either because the person has filed suit or has been served with a summons, warrant, etc. Subject matter jurisdiction refers to the authority of a court to handle a particular type of proceeding, such as district court has authority to handle probate matters and circuit court has authority to hear matters regarding injunctions.
