Legal Question in Business Law in Louisiana
My husband and I own a business. I assume it is 50/50. I am filling out a form and it is asking if 51% of our business is owned by a woman. I know women can get money easier than a man since we are a minority. What would it take for me to show I am 51% owner instead of 50? Is it a big legal deal or can I just list me as 51% owner? What would I have to show as proof? Thank you.

I am not licensed in your jurisdiction, therefore I can only speak in general terms. Usually in the charter of the business, it states the percentage that is own by each owner. If it is a partnership, then the partnership agreement would state the amount that each partner owns. If this is a way to obtain government contracts, or the like, these issues are reviewed by the contracting officers at the time of contract. The same would be said for a C corporation or a limited liability corporation..
Good old Maryland Attorneys helping us Cajun's out. We appreciate it. However, he is correct, if you did in fact "form" a company or entity that is the business, then it should say who has what interest. I suspect the 2 of you just started working a business together as man and wife and now this. Maybe you should form an LLC or a corporation.....but no one on this site can tell you because if you go face to face with a lawyer or a CPA who knows about forming companies, taxes, etc, then the many questions that always come up can be asked and answered right there. I assume you have not formed such an entity or else you would be asking the professional who helped you form it. Go face to face with a professional in your city or Parish or State.
