Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Louisiana

Both my parents passed last year and their medical bills keep coming in. They only owned a mobile home that was on my property and an old car. They had no other assets. My dad had a $7,000 life insurance policy. Legally are me and my two brothers responsible for their medical expenses?

You could be if you accept the succession. If you reject the succession, you are not liable for anything. The life insurance is not considered part of the succession, unless the succession or estate is the named beneficiary. If the policy names a person or persons as the beneficiary, the insurance company will just write a check to them and that's it for the policy. Given that there are no other appreciable assets, you should just call the bill collectors and tell them that they have passed and there are no appreciable assets. They will likely just write off the account. You can then just take possession of the car and mobile home by way of affidavit, which you can get from the OMV or any title transfer company. You don't even have to go to court for any of it.
