Here's the problem. My husband and I just received notice of a tax bill for the state of Louisiana, after nine years of living in Texas. We moved to Texas in 2001, from LA.
We have checked each year on Louisiana's tax website to see if we owed anything, we have not been listed. Four days ago we received a letter regarding these back taxes and an amnesty period. (Which by the time we got the letter was only 17 days.) The total is approximately $3500 and there is no way we can pay it. (We're struggling and have already defaulted on our student loans.) What do we do?

Those amnesty periods don't come around often and they are good to take advantage of when they do. I believe you may have missed the amnesty deal already. If you have not, I would recommend taking advantage of it. If not, you can still call them and work out a payment arrangement. They will often accept partial payments and allow a payment plan. Best thing to do is to call them and work with them. By the way, you need to do the same with those student loans. You can't even declare bankruptcy on student loans (almost never) and having them in default will ruin your credit. You should get yourself on a budget, call all of your creditors, and start working your way out of debt. If you need to declare bankruptcy, you should talk to a bankruptcy lawyer near you.
I would NOT recommend going to one of those "credit repair" centers. Many of them are scams and not worth your time or money. If you are in a hole that you can't get out of, talk to a bankruptcy lawyer and an accountant who can put you on a budget and help negotiate with your creditors.
