Legal Question in Consumer Law in Maryland

Mislead

I have been living with someone for eight years and just recently found out that he has a three year old son. We were planning on being married and adopting the baby he move out in Oct and I just found out that he has married the mother of his child. He has left me with bills and a lot of suffering I was checking to see what I can do legally. I would like to sue him and his new wife for pain and suffering. He continues to tell me that we will marry before the year is out. He also tells me that he is not married but I went to the courthouse and got a copy of the marriage license. What can I do. If there is nothing please tell me there is nothing I can do.

Re: Mislead

Your situation is quite unfortunate albeit very common. Any joint bills, leases, or other terms of debt that he signed upon personally will avail you of certain legal remedies. If you signed personally without him signing then you have another matter. This is not to say that you do not have legal remedies with the later but that the cost of hiring a lawyer may exceed the benefit. As to pain and suffering, unless you have adverse physical effects that can be directly attributable to his intentional acts, you do not likely have a legal case. Common law marriage is not recognized when such is established within the state of Maryland. Personally, I would consider this man to not be worthy of your affection and, if need be, you should seek assistance to overcome the burdens he has placed upon your well being.
