Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

I have given my boyfriend money for the last 3 years and he said he would pay me back. We are now breaking up and he says he will not pay me the money. We have nothing in writing saying he would pay me. I only have cancelled checks. Can I get this money back from him? I live in Maryland.

It all depends on the evidence you have of the debt. Although written contracts are not needed, it is harder to prove the debt when you don't have something in writing. However, the cancelled checks, texts, e-mails, and witnesses may prove your case.

Depending on the size of the debt, you may be able to file in small claims court.
