Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

collection agency/attorney harrassment

I have been trying to pay a hospital bill through a collection agency to the best of my ability. I lost my debit card and gave them the new card no. It obviously did not go through. I was sent a letter that a judgement was put on me. I was never informed of court date. They proceeded to contact my father in law and threatened to put him in contempt of court, then they contacted my bank trying to garnish the account. We have sent them $400.00 in 3 weeks. Financially we are in terrible shape. The have been extremely rude to me everytime I contact either the agency or attorney. We live in a small town I am humiliated. I don't know what they will try next. Is there anything I can do about this?

Re: collection agency/attorney harrassment

You need a consumer law attorney who regularly practices in the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. These attorneys often give free consultations to new clients. If you google Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, you should find a few who practice in your area. Time is of the essence in this matter because of possible problems with service in your lawsuit, if there was actually a lawsuit.
