Sentence modification is a process where the convicted can petition the court to modify or reduce their sentence for any number of reasons. Filing for a modification is a routine process and does not in any way mean that the request will be granted. The original sentence may have included requirements for counseling, restitution, mental health evaluation, etc., that may have been completed, the sentence may have been illegal, or the argument may be made that the sentence was too harsh. Without additional details, it is impossible to say what might happen in your ex-boyfriend's case.

The person who can give you the best assessment of the chances for modification is the lawyer who represented your boyfriend, because he or she should be the person most familiar with your boyfriend's case.
