Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

i have a court date on 08/12/2010 for a bad check that I wrote to a MARS for $71. I do not have a criminal record and am 46 years old. Will they just let me pay the $71 or will I go to jail? I am scared to death as I have never had any criminal legal problems in my life. Can you help me?

They may allow you to pay restitution for a Stet, or even maybe a dismissal. Maybe some community service also. But saying that they may will not allow you any relief, because it is a very low degree of certainty, and I don't know anything about the details of this case. Nor do I know which judge you will have. The best thing you could do is get a lawyer ASAP if you don't already have one.

If you were not advised by the court previously about your right to counsel, then the court may grant you a postponement to seek counsel. Do not speak with anyone except your attorney about your side of the story regarding the charges, because you may destroy any chance that have of defending yourself.
