Whether to have an attorney, and whether to find out if you qualify to have the Office of the Public Defender appoint one are entirely personal decisions. You could be incarcerated. An attorney can help you evaluate the evidence, assess the risks, and litigate issues that might persuade the state or the court to dismiss the charge. Even if you were found guilty, an attorney can help you present mitigation and argue for leniency at sentencing.
