Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland
Is it a criminal offense if I was not aware of the amount of a check written ,that I had signed, and it bounced. It was supposed to be half of what they made it out for.

Is it actually a crime, probably not (because you didn't have the required intent). But you STILL need a lawyer, so get one immediately!

A person may not write a check for more than he has the ability to pay. That means either knowingly doing so, or giving a blank check, if you do not have the funds sufficient to covert it.
However, if the amount of the check that you had completed was subsequently altered without your knowledge, that can be a defense. You will have to show that the check was altered and that you did not alter it.
