Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

MY daughter was employed at Ross for about 6 months, recently she started allowing her friends to get clothes and accessories and when they would come to her line she would only charge them for about two or three things. well a couple days ago it caught up with her. She was arrested at her job and taken to jail, were she stayed for a couple hours and was released. she is 18 years old l and has had no priors (never been arrested before). the Ross says that the amount of loss was a thousand dollars and some change.(so the charge on the paper says theft over a thousand which is a felony in md) Im really worried because she is supposed to start school in august and the court date is september.can somebody telll me what to expect and what the best way would go for her to get out of this without a felony on her record or going to jail. please help this scared mother

Ultimately, the outcome depends on who the prosecutor and who the judge are. She probably is not going to have to serve additional time, but there is no guarantee. She might receive probation before judgement, which would permit her to indicate that she would not have been convicted. However, the federal government does not recognize probation before judgement, and it would impact her student loan eligibility just like a conviction.
