Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

My ex-boyfriend has many of my belongings at his home and refuses to send them to me. He also has helped pay some bills on my home which I am selling and tells me I must pay him now. I never signed any agreement with him nor did I ask him to help me with these bills. Also, I told him that I will pay him when my home sells (if it indeed sells) as I do not and can not get the money now to repay him and he knows that. He has been emailing me and calling me names, etc., in his email request for his money. I have never told him that I wouldn't repay him, but he insists that I pay him now. He knows that I do not have the money. Also, I'm considering calling the local police regarding my belongings at his home. I'm afraid to go there myself because of the nasty, ugly, and scarey way in which he has been emailing me. What are my legal rights and what should I do?
