Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland
False Credentials
A friend of mine applied to a university in Maryland with Fake diplomas and transcripts. She holds a masters degree however not from the university she claimed she had the masters degree from. The university discovered that after he left. She left after one semester only. She was granted a teaching assistanship and this comes with payment of his tuition, insurance and also she is paid a salary. She did a good job as a teaching assistant and the professor as well as the students were satisfied. Now the university wants all the money that was paid to her back. Does she have to return the money? If she does will that prevent her from being prosecuted(A police officer called her after she left to ask about the allegations) What are her chances?
Thank you very much.

Re: False Credentials
Your friend should not speak to the police. She can be charged with a crime for falsifying documents as well as theft - because she got the money basically by committing a crime. Paying the money will not stop her from being prosecuted, but if she paid it back before she were charged it certainly would help with any sentence. Your friend needs a lawyer right away. Check out my web cite at www.weatherspoonfirm.com There she will find a card to print out that advises police she does not want to make any statements.
