Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

I'am being charged with second degree assault and have not went to court for it yet. I was in a verbal fight with my cousin we are both females and I let her know that I wasn't going to put my hands on her. She pushed me I pushed her back and she picked up a 12 inch mag light flashlight and hit me in my head so I grabbed her by the collar of her shirt slammed her against the door so I could get behind her to sub due her because she was still hitting me in my head with the flashlight so I put her in a chokehold of sort but only to protect myself because I ended up with 8 staples in my head and got arrested and got to go to court as a defendant and I'am not understanding what for. I got a public defender but cant talk to them until next month. Need help.

You describe self defense. However, that is for trial. Anyone may be accused of violating the law whether she did or not. You should persistently try to make an appointment with your attorney.
