Should I get a lawyer?

My daughter was picked up for shoplifting under $500 on 12/28/08. I need to know if I should get a lawyer.

This is a misdemeanor carrying a maximum penalty of 18 months in jail. Or if she's a juvenile, she could be detained until she turns 18. But beyond that, if it is her first offense and she is an adult, she is risking a criminal record that will haunt her the rest of her life.

So, yes, get a lawyer. There may be defenses or other options to avoid conviction even if she is guilty.
