can a person be found guilty of first degree attempted murder by pointing a unloaded gun to a person head and pulling the trigger

No, but that person could be convicted of the attempt to frighten variety of first degree assault, which is a felony, and of the use of a handgun in the commission of a felony or a crime of violence. If convicted, that person would be facing 45 years imprisonment.
