Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

public defender

Is a public defender a good option for a hearing on criminal charges? My son was assaulted by 2 men, but responded with a knife that he had in his pocket from fishing earlier in the day. My son is charged with 2 counts of assault and reckless endangerment. My son is only 20 yrs. old, this is the first time he lives on his own 300 miles from home. He only went to Maryland for a job for the summer.

Re: public defender

The advantage of a public defender is that a person who cannot afford a lawyer gets a lawyer. The disadvantage is that a person cannot pick which public defender will represent him. Like in any group there are good ones and bad.

Search for criminal lawyers in your state at lawguru.com. When you get a list of the ones near you, make appointments with some and retain the one with whom you are the most comfortable.

Re: public defender

The disadvantages of a public defender are that they have a very large caseload, and often cannot give the attention to a case that it deserves. They are career criminal defense lawyers, however. You and your son should speak with some lawyers and decide which option is best for you.
