is it possible for a father to get custody of a child if the child lives with the mother?

Yes, but the father must file a court petition and be able to show that it would be in the best interests of the child to give him custody. Judges are reluctant to change custody unless there is a compelling reason to do so. If the father is serious about this, he should consult with an experienced family attorney on how to proceed.
